Artist Statement
I create work that is ungovernable to tradition or stable categorization. To express the many worlds I straddle as an artist and nwanyị di egwu, I interweave theater, song, poetry, video, movement and ritual masquerade in live performances. My work is spirit-centered and often collectively-generated, exploring Igbo cosmology and its Afro-Diasporic syncretisms. The end result is a heavy, opulent, intimate, and immersive praxis.
Chibueze dancing during a performance of "WOMAN IS GOD TO WOMAN: a ritual mas," presented by Jess Curtis/Gravity in 2018. She kneels on red, white and blue painted concrete in a public plaza with tall columns behind her, somewhere in the Fillmore neighborhood of San Francisco. She is leaning back, eyes closed, with her right arm bent and right hand partially hidden behind her body. She has short baby locs and wears a black bodysuit. Photo by: Alley Wilde
